Antique Wood Framed Hand Painted Tri-fold Wall Mirror

Antique Wood Framed Hand Painted Tri-fold Wall Mirror. Up for sale is the unique French Aesthetic Movement tri-fold wall mirror, dated circa 1880. The tri-fold mirror matching and folding within a wood frame is relatively larger in size and composed of two panels with brass brim sets. Each panel is elegantly hand painted on celluloid with a lady gazing at an angel statue, respectively. Three mirrors are revealed when the both panels are pulled open.

The surface of the wood frame is delicately sculptured with floral and geometric motifs and gold gilt. An iron chain on verso is for hanging purposes. The clasp on the first panel is marked with Breveté SGDG, LB and Patented 1876. As stated in Wikipedia, Breveté SGDG was a French type of patent that ceased to exist in 1968.

The name was a common abbreviation for Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement (patent without government guarantees). LB was for the maker Ludger Tiburge Berton, who was granted a patent in 1876 upon his application for an improvement in mirrors. A letter with the patent read Be it known that I, LUDGER TIBURCE BERTON, of Paris, France, have a new and improved Mirror or Looking-Glass, of which the following is a specification this invention relates to an improved mirror or looking-glass by which the reflections may be multiplied so that a person may see himself from several sides without change of position.

Celluloid was originated in 1856 as the first thermoplastic material and developed in the 1860s and 1870s by mixing nitrocellulose and camphor. Its common contemporary uses are table tennis balls, musical instruments, combs, office equipment, and guitar guitar picks. Measures: Dimensions, Frame part , 16 ½ high x 14 ¼ wide (closed); Portrait/mirror part , 12 ½ high x 10 ¼ wide; Weight, approx. 6 lbs (2.7 kg). Condition: Good, one of the mirrors shows wear, consistent with age and use.
